Matchbox – 1913 Cadillac

Scale model of an automobile, the 1913 Cadillac, made by Matchbox. This example is reference Y-6 ¹, included in the "Models of Yesteryear" series. It is made in England from 1968 to 1976. Metal body painted in gold color, top in brownish-red (maroon). Metal base painted in gold color, comprising in a single element the fenders, running boards and a reproduction of the chassis. Spare tire mounted at the rear. No glazing on the metal windshield. Interior details in plastic, including the black steering wheel and brownish-red seats. Plastic tires detailed with shoulder blocks, spoked rims in metal (brass). No suspension. Removable plastic top. The nominal scale is 1:48 and the overall length is approximately 3.3 in. About 2 oz. This model represents an automobile, a Cadillac 1913 ² with "roadster" bodywork, from 1913, equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line engine with 365.9 cu in ³ and "40–50 hp" ⁴ (29–37 kW). Top speed was approximately 60 mph. 

I am known to dislike the massive wheels of the third generation "Models of Yesteryear" miniatures, from 1973 onwards – proof that changing is not the same as improving. If we place this miniature of the second generation next to an image of the real car, we understand Mr. Odell's commitment to obtaining the best possible result with the means available, creating a model that, due to its robustness, could also be played with by kids. The proportions of the real car are well reproduced in an excellent quality mold/casting. The painting is not realistic, but it has the peculiar charm of the sixties and seventies and is appealing. The plastic and metal details are well molded and applied. And then, we have the wheels, gracefully made in metal and with plastic tires, of adequate proportions and properly detailed. There is a timeless nobility to this model that enchants me and that sometimes, when placing it on the desk, takes me, along bucolic paths on serene summer days, to simpler times. This automobile, the 1913 Cadillac, is in my collection under the themes "American Vehicles" and "Automobiles". ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em cor dourada, capota em plástico vermelho-acastanhado ("maroon"). Base em metal pintada em cor dourada, compreendendo num só elemento os pára-lamas, estribos e a reprodução do chassis. Pneu sobresselente montado à retaguarda. Sem vidros no pára-brisas em metal. Detalhes interiores em plástico, compreendendo o volante em preto e os assentos em plástico vermelho-acastanhado. Pneus em plástico reproduzindo os blocos de ombro, jantes raiadas em metal (latão). Sem suspensão. Capota amovível em plástico. A escala nominal é 1:48 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 85 mm. Cerca de 57 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, um Cadillac 1913 ² com carroçaria "roadster", de 1913, equipado com um motor de 4 cilindros em linha com 5996 cm³ ³ e "40–50 hp" ⁴ (29–37 kW). A velocidade máxima era de aproximadamente 97 km/h. 

É conhecido o meu desagrado pelas massivas rodas das miniaturas "Models of Yesteryear" da terceira geração, a partir de 1973 – a prova de que mudar não é o mesmo que melhorar. Se colocarmos esta miniatura da segunda geração ao lado de uma imagem do carro real compreendemos o empenho do Sr. Odell em obter o melhor resultado possível com os meios disponíveis, criando um modelo que, pela sua robustez, podia igualmente ser brincado pelos miúdos. As proporções do carro real são bem reproduzidas num molde de excelente qualidade. A pintura não é realista, mas tem o peculiar encanto dos anos sessenta e setenta e é apelativa. Os detalhes em plástico e em metal são bem moldados e aplicados. E depois, temos as rodas, graciosamente executadas em metal e com os pneus em plástico, de proporções adequadas e devidamente detalhados. Há neste modelo uma nobreza intemporal que me encanta e que por vezes, ao colocá-lo sobre a secretária, me leva, por caminhos bucólicos em serenos dias de verão, a tempos mais simples. Este automóvel, o 1913 Cadillac, encontra-se na minha colecção sob os temas "Veículos Americanos" e "Automóveis". ●

¹  Sometimes shown as Y-6-3 or Y-6 (3), the "3" meaning it is the third different model bearing the Y-6 reference. ● Por vezes mostrado como Y-6-3 ou Y-6 (3), o "3" significa que é o terceiro modelo diferente com a referência Y-6.

²  Essentially a member of the Cadillac Thirty family, the "Thirty" refers to the power rating of 30 hp.
