Matchbox – 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall

Scale model of an automobile, the 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall, made by Matchbox. This example is reference Y-2 ¹, included in the "Models of Yesteryear" series. It is made in England from 1971 to 1982. This is an early 1980s example. Metal body painted in red with gray hood (gray, simulating unpainted metal). Metal base painted in black, comprising in a single element the fenders, running boards and a reproduction of the chassis. Spare tire mounted on the running board on the right side. No glazing on the metal windshield. Interior details in plastic, including the black steering wheel and cream seats. Rubber tires detailed with thread and shoulder blocks and decorated with white stripe, red plastic spoked rims. No suspension. The nominal scale is 1:47 and the overall length is approximately 3.5 in. About 2.4 oz. This model represents an automobile, a Vauxhall C-Type Prince Henry with Leicester body, built in 1914. The "Prince Henry" name derives from the third "Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt" (Prince Henry Trials) ² held in Germany in 1910, a 1208 miles race for touring cars, in which Vauxhall entered three C-10 models. Although Ferdinand Porsche and Heinrich Schönfeldt won in an Austro-Daimler, the English entries, fast, reliable and handsome, caught the attention of the public, which led to the production of replicas known as "Prince Henry Vauxhalls", from 1911 to 1914. From 1913, the Vauxhall 4-cylinder in-line engine had its capacity increased to 242.2 cu in, offering 76 hp (56 kW). Top speed was approximately 75 mph.

This 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall was the first of my "Models of Yesteryear" and some forty years later, (carefully) played with, it is still one of my favorite models. In some aspects, it falls short of the elegant and delicate proportions of the real car – without even mentioning the massive wheels and tires, more at home in a delirious Excalibur SS. But, for a seventies model, it's attractive, well made and detailed and the plastic parts, paint job and axles have survived a fair number of adventures on the living room floor. The poor finish of the white stripes on the tires came, as is, from the production line – in the early eighties, quality control at Matchbox was understandably far from its best. But the singular charm of these miniatures, excuses everything. This automobile, the 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall, is in my collection under the themes "British Vehicles" and "Automobiles". ●

Base em metal pintada em preto, compreendendo num só elemento os pára-lamas, estribos e a reprodução do chassis. Pneu sobresselente montado sobre o estribo no lado direito. Sem vidros no pára-brisas em metal. Detalhes interiores em plástico, compreendendo o volante em preto e os assentos em creme. Pneus em borracha detalhados com estrias e blocos de ombro e decorados com faixa branca, jantes raiadas em plástico vermelho. Sem suspensão. A escala nominal é 1:47 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 90 mm. Cerca de 67 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, um Vauxhall C-Type Prince Henry com carroçaria Leicester, de 1914. O nome "Prince Henry" deriva do terceiro "Prinz-Heinrich-Fahrt" (Tour Prinz-Heinrich) ² realizado na Alemanha em 1910, uma corrida de 1944,6 km para carros de turismo, na qual a Vauxhall inscreveu três modelos C-10. Embora Ferdinand Porsche e Heinrich Schönfeldt tenham vencido num Austro-Daimler, os participantes ingleses, rápidos, confiáveis e bonitos, chamaram a atenção do público, o que levou à produção de réplicas conhecidas como “Prince Henry Vauxhalls”, de 1911 a 1914. A partir de 1913, o motor Vauxhall de 4 cilindros em linha teve a sua capacidade aumentada para 3969 cm³, passando a disponibilizar 76 hp (56 kW). A velocidade máxima era de aproximadamente 121 km/h. 

Este 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall foi o primeiro dos meus "Models of Yesteryear" e cerca de quarenta anos depois, (cuidadosamente) brincado, ainda é um dos meus modelos favoritos. Em alguns aspectos, fica aquém das proporções elegantes e delicadas do carro real – sem sequer referir as massivas rodas e pneus, mais à vontade num delirante Excalibur SS. Mas, para um modelo dos anos setenta, é apelativo, bem feito e detalhado e as peças de plástico, a pintura e os eixos sobreviveram a um bom número de aventuras no chão da sala. O péssimo acabamento das faixas brancas nos pneus veio, como está, da linha de produção – no início dos anos oitenta, o controlo de qualidade na Matchbox estava compreensivelmente longe do seu melhor. Mas o singular encanto destas miniaturas, desculpa tudo. Este automóvel, o 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall, encontra-se na minha colecção sob os temas "Veículos Britânicos" e "Automóveis". ●

Ignoring the aforementioned “wheels on steroids”, this model is well proportioned and looks good from all angles.

How much?

Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case, I will pay up to €10 for a 1980s 1914 Prince Henry Vauxhall by Matchbox, loose and in good condition, or up to €15 if boxed and in perfect condition. ●
