Welly – 1967 Pontiac Firebird

Scale model of an automobile, the 1967 Pontiac Firebird, made by Welly. This example is reference 52358. It is made in China, possibly in 2016. In Portugal, this model is available as part of the series "Carros Miniatura III", promoted by Cofina in 2017. When buying the "Correio da Manhã" ¹ newspaper, the reader has the option of also buying the miniature. Metal body painted in metallic blue. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with the rearview mirror molded in the windshield. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels with gray details simulating the rims (7SP). No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:64 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.1 oz. This model, the 1967 Pontiac Firebird, is possibly based on the 1967 Pontiac Firebird 326 HO Hardtop Coupe, equipped with the 5343 cm³ (5.3 L), 213 kW (285 hp) L76 326 HO Pontiac V8 engine under the hood. Top speed was possibly above 120 mph.

Since their first "3-inch" models in the early eighties, Welly, based in Hong Kong, has made a remarkable evolution, improving the quality of their products and widening their offer to include all the most popular scales – 1:87, 1:60, 1:43, 1:38, 1:32, 1:24, 1:18 and 1:12. In 2022, not all of their "3-inch" models are spot-on, but most are certainly well-made, with clean and well defined castings, nice paint finishes, and good looking standard wheels. The lineup includes some iconic automobiles from America, Europe and the Eastern Block. This 1967 Pontiac Firebird is well finished and features subtle printed details of excellent quality. Nice detail, the hood tachometer. As a note of interest, the "Firebird" is a mythological creature present in several ancient cultures, including the Native American. In the automotive context, the term is used by General Motors in the fifties on a series of turbine-powered prototypes, before being chosen by Pontiac in 1967 to name their venture into the "pony car" segment, dominated by the Ford Mustang, released in 1965.

Na compra do jornal "Correio da Manhã" ¹, o leitor tem a opção de comprar também a miniatura. Carroçaria em metal pintada em azul metalizado. Base em plástico preto. Vidros representados em plástico transparente com o espelho retrovisor moldado no pára-brisas. Detalhes interiores em plástico preto. Rodas em plástico com detalhes em cinzento a simular as jantes. Sem suspensão. A escala nominal parece ser à volta de 1:64 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 75 mm. Cerca de 30 g. Este modelo, o 1967 Pontiac Firebird, é possivelmente baseado no Pontiac Firebird 326 HO Hardtop Coupe de 1967, equipado com o motor L76 326 HO Pontiac V8, com 5343 cm³ (5.3 L) e 213 kW (285 hp) sob o "capot". A velocidade máxima era possivelmente acima de 193 km/h.

Desde seus primeiros modelos "3-inches" no início dos anos 80, a Welly, baseada em Hong Kong, fez uma evolução notável, melhorando a qualidade dos seus produtos e ampliando a sua oferta para incluir todas as escalas mais populares – 1:87, 1:60, 1:43, 1:38, 1:32, 1:24, 1:18 e 1:12. Em 2022, nem todos os seus modelos "3-inches" são perfeitos, mas a maioria é certamente bem-feita, com moldes limpos e bem definidos, bons acabamentos de pintura, e rodas padrão de boa aparência. A gama inclui alguns automóveis icónicos da América, da Europa e do Bloco de Leste. Este Pontiac Firebird 1967 é bem acabado e apresenta detalhes impressos subtis e de excelente qualidade. Bom detalhe, o conta-rotações no "capot". Como nota de interesse, o "Firebird", ou "Pássaro de Fogo", é uma criatura mitológica presente em várias culturas ancestrais, incluindo a Nativa Americana. No contexto automóvel, o termo é usado pela General Motors nos anos 50 numa série de protótipos movidos a turbina, antes de ser escolhido pela Pontiac em 1967 para nomear a sua entrada no segmento "pony car", dominado pelo Ford Mustang, lançado em 1965.

¹ Even though the series "Carros Miniatura III" may be considered a "LIMITED EDITION", only available in 2017, many of  its models,  including the 1967 Pontiac Firebird, do reappear, unchanged, in other Welly/Cofina series. As far as I know, once out of the package it is impossible to find out which Welly/Cofina series the model belongs to. ● Embora a série "Carros Miniatura III" possa ser considerada uma "LIMITED EDITION", disponível apenas em 2017, muitos dos seus modelos, incluindo o 1967 Pontiac Firebird, reaparecem, inalterados, em outras séries Welly/Cofina. Tanto quanto sei, uma vez fora da embalagem é impossível saber a que série Welly/Cofina pertence o modelo.

How much?

Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case, I will pay up to €3 for a 1967 Pontiac Firebird by Welly, loose and in good condition, or up to €5 if boxed and in perfect condition. ●
