Welly – 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus
Scale model of a minibus, the 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus, made by Welly. This example is reference 52221. It is made in China, possibly in 2016. In Portugal, this model is available as part of the series "Carros Miniatura", promoted by Cofina in 2016. When buying the "Correio da Manhã" ¹ newspaper, the reader has the option of also buying the miniature. Metal body painted in red and off-white. Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic with details molded in the windshield and front door windows. Interior details in beige plastic, showing three seats (driver and eight passengers) and a luggage space. Plastic tires, "chromed" plastic rims (5SP). No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be around 1:57 and the overall length is approximately 3 in. About 1.6 oz. This model, the 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus, represents a 1963 Volkswagen Typ 2 (T1), possibly equipped with the 1493 cm³ (1.5 L), 38 kW (52 hp) "boxer" engine.
As a note of interest, the Typ 1 is Volkswagen's first model, the popular "beetle". The Typ 2 is the second model, commercially known as Transporter or Kombi, from "Kombinationskraftwagen", expressing the idea of a motor vehicle capable of transporting passengers and/or different types of goods. T1, T2, T3 and so on, denotes the successive generations of the Kombi family. Welly's model is thus a Typ 2 T1. In some contexts, this particular example is called a "13-window bus". In Portugal, the Typ 2 models (T1 and T2) are affectionately called "pães-de-forma", or "breadloaves", because of their shape.
I would expect from Welly a much better treatment of this icon, the Volkswagen Typ 2 (T1). But what I get is exactly what I see – a poorly finished casting, a sloppy paint job and an intriguing choice of wheels. Of course these rims are reminiscent of the beautiful Empi GT5s, but there is nothing to suggest that this Typ 2 is a "restomod" version – I think the wheels fitted by Welly on the Volkswagen Bus T2 would be more suitable. And why did Welly shrink the VW emblem? To top it off, my example came with the rear bumper damaged, one of the tips already missing. Maybe I'm being too harsh – just because I'm disappointed. For all intents and purposes, I have a toy in my hand that is even sold as a keychain (52221K). At the end of the day, what saves this model is the icon it seeks to represent – we always love it, the Typ 2 (T1), for better or for worse. This minibus, the 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus, is in my collection under the themes "German Vehicles" and "Vans & Pickup Trucks". ●

Em Portugal, este modelo encontra-se disponível como parte da série "Carros Miniatura", promovida pela Cofina em 2016. Na compra do jornal "Correio da Manhã" ¹, o leitor tem a opção de comprar também a miniatura. Carroçaria em metal pintada em vermelho e "off-white". Base em plástico preto. Vidros representados em plástico transparente com detalhes moldados no pára-brisas e nas janelas das portas da dianteiras. Detalhes interiores em plástico bege, mostrando três bancos (condutor e oito passageiros) e um espaço para bagagem. Pneus em plástico, jantes em plástico com acabamento "cromado" (5SP). Sem suspensão. A escala nominal parece ser à volta de 1:57 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 75 mm. Cerca de 44 g. Este modelo, o 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus, representa um Volkswagen Typ 2 (T1) de 1963, possivelmente equipado com o motor "boxer" com 1493 cm³ (1.5 L) e 38 kW (52 hp).
Como nota de interesse, o Typ 1 é o primeiro modelo da Volkswagen, o popular "carocha". O Typ 2 é o segundo modelo, designado comercialmente por Transporter ou Kombi, de "Kombinationskraftwagen", expressando a ideia de um veículo motorizado apto a transportar passageiros e/ou diversos tipos de mercadoria. T1, T2, T3 e assim por diante, denota as sucessivas gerações da família Kombi. O modelo da Welly é assim um Volkswagen Typ 2 (T1). Em alguns contextos, este exemplar específico é chamado de "13-window bus", literalmente "autocarro de 13 janelas". Em Portugal, os modelos Typ 2 (T1 e T2) são afectuosamente chamados de "pães-de-forma" devido ao seu formato.
Esperaria da Welly um tratamento muito melhor deste ícone, o Volkswagen Typ 2 (T1). Mas o que recebo é exactamente o que vejo – um molde mal acabado, uma pintura desleixada e uma escolha intrigante de rodas. Claro que estas jantes fazem lembrar as belíssimas Empi GT5, mas não há nada a sugerir que este Typ 2 seja uma versão "restomod" – penso que as rodas colocadas pela Welly no Volkswagen Bus T2 seriam mais adequadas. E porque razão encolheu a Welly o emblema da VW? Para completar, o meu exemplar veio com o pára-choques traseiro danificado, já sem uma das pontas. Talvez esteja a ser demasiado duro – apenas porque estou desapontado. Para todos os efeitos, tenho na mão um brinquedo que até é vendido como porta-chaves (52221K). No final de contas, o que salva este modelo é o ícone que ele procura representar – adoramo-lo sempre, o Typ 2 (T1), para o melhor e para o pior. Este miniautocarro, o 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus, encontra-se na minha colecção sob os temas "Veículos Alemães" e "Carrinhas & Camionetas". ●

Versions and color variants
As far as I know, this 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus is only available in red and off-white and yellow and off-white. I am aware of a slightly different casting available in several color combinations and with a pull-back version. Corrections or additions to the previously described are welcome. ● Tanto quanto sei, este 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus está disponível apenas em vermelho e "off-white" e amarelo e "off-white". How much?
Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of historical relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that the questions will not stop, I will include – not necessarily the market value – but rather, and based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the moment of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case, I will pay up to €3 for a 1963 Volkswagen T1 Bus by Welly, loose and in good condition, or up to €5 if boxed and in perfect condition. ●
