Hing Fat – Space Men

After the series of publications dedicated to the promotional figurines of Rajá and Olá, several readers asked me why I had not included the "bigger astronauts" series ¹. As far as I know, these figurines have never been part of any promotional series in Portugal. If memory serves me well, they were sold in plastic sachets, next to the usual toy soldiers. Nowadays, they come up for sale mixed with various figurines associated with the Olá or Rajá brands, which led some enthusiasts to think that they would be part of a promotional series. Nevertheless, and in spite of their limited interest, these "bigger astronauts", probably around the 1:35th (50 mm) scale, seem to appeal to a fair number of collectors. Especially for these friends, here is a brief description. 

Miniatures of astronaut figures. These figurines are presumably made by Hing Fat in Hong Kong in the eighties and sold in sets of "Space Men" inside plastic sachets. Monochrome plastic, various colors. The height of the figurines varies between approximately 1.6 and 2 in. About 0.1 oz. These miniatures represent a group of astronauts involved in various roles. They are wearing a space suite presumably inspired by the model adopted by NASA in 1959 for use in "Project Mercury". Of the seven figurines shown here, four stand on a base, three stand without a base, and one is expected to sit in some sort of space vehicle, perhaps a lunar rover. According to some collectors, the genealogy of these figurines goes back to the series produced by Marx Toys or the Multiple Products Corporation. Not being an expert in this matter, I can't add anything else. Over the years these figurines have been on sale in several countries and in 2022 they can still be purchased on the Hing Fat website in sets from the "Space Astronauts" range. "Space Astronauts"? These miniatures of astronaut figures are in my collection under the theme Premium Figurines & Toys. ●

Após a série de publicações dedicadas às figuras promocionais da Rajá e da Olá, vários leitores perguntaram-me porque não tinha incluído a série dos "astronautas maiorzinhos" ¹. Que eu saiba, estas figurinhas nunca fizeram parte de nenhuma série promocional em Portugal. Se a memória não me atraiçoa, eram vendidas em saquetas de plástico, ao lado dos habituais soldadinhos. Hoje em dia, surgem à venda misturadas com várias figuras associadas às marcas Olá ou Rajá, o que levou alguns entusiastas a pensar que fariam parte de uma série promocional. No entanto, e apesar do seu interesse limitado, estes "astronautas maiorzinhos", provavelmente à volta da escala 1:35 (50 mm), parecem apelar a um bom número de coleccionadores. Em especial para estes amigos, aqui fica uma breve descrição. 

Miniaturas de figuras de astronautas. Estas figurinhas são presumivelmente feitas pela Hing Fat em Hong Kong nos anos oitenta e vendidas em conjuntos de "Space Men" (homens do espaço) dentro de saquetas de plástico. Plástico monocromático, diversas cores. A altura das figurinhas varia entre aproximadamente 41 e 50 mm. Cerca de 2 a 3 g. Estas miniaturas representam um grupo de astronautas envolvidos em diversas funções. Todos os astronautas envergam um fato espacial presumivelmente inspirado pelo modelo adoptado em 1959 pela NASA e destinado ao "Project Mercury". Das sete figurinhas mostradas aqui, quatro mantêm-se de pé sobre uma base, três mantêm-se de pé sem recurso a uma base e uma deverá sentar-se em algum tipo de veículo espacial, talvez um "rover" lunar. Segundo alguns coleccionadores, a genealogia destas figurinhas recua até às séries produzidas pela Marx Toys ou pela Multiple Products Corporation. Não sendo especialista nesta matéria, nada mais posso acrescentar. Ao longo dos anos estas figurinhas surgem à venda em diversos países e em 2022 podem ainda ser adquiridos no website da Hing Fat em conjuntos da gama "Space Astronauts". "Space Astronauts"? Nabisco "Space Explorers" series 

Released in 1969 in the USA. Associated with the Nabisco brand and offered with the "Wheat Honeys" cereals, the series "Space Explorers" comprises 6 figurines in monochrome plastic. ● Lançada nos EUA em 1969. Associada à marca Nabisco e oferecida com os cereais "Wheat Honeys", a série "Space Explorers" compreende 6 figurinhas em plástico monocromático.

Cleaning these little things

Soap, warm water and a toothbrush is all that I need to clean these plastic figurines. If necessary, toothpaste can help remove some ink marks, especially those left by felt-tip pens. Most of these plastic figurines are now fifty years old and I do not advise the use of aggressive cleaning solutions, such as bleach. ● Sabão, água morna e uma escova de dentes é tudo o que preciso para limpar estas figurinhas de plástico. Se necessário, a pasta dentífrica pode ajudar a remover algumas marcas de tinta, sobretudo as deixadas por canetas de feltro. A maioria destas figurinhas de plástico tem agora cinquenta anos e não aconselho o uso de soluções de limpeza agressivas, como a lixívia.
