Hot Wheels – '16 Bugatti Chiron

Scale model of an automobile, the '16 Bugatti Chiron, made by Hot Wheels. This example is reference 7 ¹, included in the "2020 Factory Fresh" series. It is made in Malaysia in 2019. Metal body painted in "Metalflake Black". Black plastic base. Glazing represented in black tinted transparent plastic, with molded details. Interior details in gray plastic. Plastic wheels (J5), "chrome" rims. No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be 1:63 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 1.1 oz. This model represents an automobile, the 2016 Bugatti Chiron, equipped with the 7993 cm³, 1103 kW (1500 hp) Bugatti WR16 64v4T W16 engine. Top speed is electronically limited to 261 mph.

If we put this miniature next to an image of the Bugatti Chiron, we'll see that Hot Wheels did an excellent job. The proportions are essentially correct, as are the details – although, in my opinion, the iconic radiator grille falls short of expectations. In my example, the bodywork is well finished and covered in a stunning "Metalflake Black". Unfortunately, the printed details reveal some flaws. Through the tinted windows, we glimpse a very detailed interior. For children, even without suspension, this model is a remarkable roller. For collectors of the Bugatti lineage, mainly of the contemporary period and in the context of the 1:64 scale, this model is a fundamental acquisition – however, with unsuspected dangers. As Drew Dorian and Warren Clarke write in their article "2022 Bugatti Chiron", "The Bugatti Chiron is an automotive apex predator that eats supercars for lunch." Considering that there are a large number of supercars in our collections, it might be convenient to keep our little Chirons distracted with other types of food. This automobile, the '16 Bugatti Chiron, is in my collection under the theme "German Vehicles". ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em "Metalflake Black", preto com flocos metálicos. Base em plástico preto. Vidros representados em plástico transparente fumado, com detalhes moldados. Detalhes interiores em plástico cinzento. Rodas em plástico (J5), jantes "cromadas". Sem suspensão. A escala nominal parece ser 1:63 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 72 mm. Cerca de 32 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, o Bugatti Chiron de 2016, equipado com o motor Bugatti WR16 64v4T W16 de 7993 cm³ e 1103 kW (1500 hp). A velocidade máxima é limitada electronicamente a 420 km/h.

Se colocarmos esta miniatura ao lado de uma imagem do Bugatti Chiron, veremos que a Hot Wheels fez um excelente trabalho. As proporções estão essencialmente correctas, assim como os detalhes – ainda que, a meu ver, a icónica grelha do radiador fique abaixo das expectativas. No meu exemplar, a carroçaria está bem acabada e revestida por um deslumbrante "Metalflake Black". Infelizmente, os detalhes impressos revelam algumas falhas. Através dos vidros fumados, vislumbramos um interior bem detalhado. Para os miúdos, mesmo sem suspensão, este modelo é um rolador notável. Para os coleccionadores da linhagem Bugatti, principalmente do período contemporâneo e no contexto da escala 1:64, este modelo é uma aquisição fundamental – todavia, com perigos insuspeitos. Como escrevem Drew Dorian e Warren Clarke no seu artigo "2022 Bugatti Chiron", "O Bugatti Chiron é um predador automotivo de topo que come supercarros ao almoço". Considerando que há um grande número de supercarros nas nossas colecções, talvez seja conveniente manter os nossos pequenos Chirons distraídos com outros tipos de comida. How much?

Several readers have asked me to include the market value of the items described. In fact, and as most collectors will agree – an item is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. However, most collectors will also agree on average values, based on objective notions of relevance, scarcity and conservation. Therefore, and as I know that these requests for market values will not stop, I will occasionally include, not necessarily the market value, but rather, based on my perception of the markets over the last thirty years, the value that, hypothetically and at the time of publication, I am willing to pay for the item described. In this case, in 2022 and in Portugal, it is still possible to find the '16 Bugatti Chiron on sale in the usual stores for just over €2. In the context of collecting and given the interest in the Bugatti theme, it comes at different prices, naturally higher. ●

Vários leitores têm-me pedido para incluir o valor de mercado dos itens descritos. De facto, e como a maioria dos coleccionadores concordará – um item vale o que alguém está disposto a pagar por ele. No entanto, a maioria dos coleccionadores também concordará com valores médios, baseados em noções objectivas de relevância, de escassez e de conservação. Assim sendo, e como sei que esses pedidos por valores de mercado não vão parar, passo a incluir ocasionalmente, não forçosamente o valor de mercado, mas sim, e baseado na minha percepção dos mercados ao longo dos últimos trinta anos, o valor que, hipoteticamente e no momento da publicação, estou disposto a pagar pelo item descrito. Neste caso, em 2022 e em Portugal, é ainda possível encontrar o '16 Bugatti Chiron à venda nas lojas habituais por pouco mais de 2 €. No contexto do coleccionismo e dado o interesse pelo tema Bugatti, surge a diversos preços, naturalmente superiores. ●
