Hot Wheels – Ford GT-40
Scale model of a race car, the Ford GT-40, made by Hot Wheels. This example is reference 2 ¹, included in the "2007 All Stars" series. It is made in Thailand in 2007. Metal body painted in dark red, with printed details, including the race number "22". Black plastic base. Glazing represented in transparent plastic, with molded details. Interior details in black plastic. Plastic wheels (5SP), "chrome" rims. No suspension. The nominal scale seems to be 1:58 and the overall length is approximately 2.8 in. About 1.3 oz. This model represents a race car, the Ford GT40 Mark I, possibly one of 87 semi-monocoque chassis, P/1000–1086, completed in 1965–1969. These race cars were normally equipped with the 4736 cm³ 289 Cobra "small block" V8 engine, with power outputs around 380 bhp. Optionally, some were delivered to customers without an engine and transmission.
The Ford GT40 is one of my ten favorite cars – of all time. I have several reproductions of it at different scales and when I look at them I understand that it is not easy to capture the essence of the predator, its muscles and its posture. Reproducing the voluptuous Mark I is particularly difficult at any scale. With this Ford GT-40, Hot Wheels did well. The space between the wheels and the body is perhaps too much and it lacks the sensuality of the panels enveloping the rear wheels, but the rest is there, including the elegant upturn of the rear, reminiscent of a swan's tail. The details are well defined and proportioned – love the mirrors, next to the fuel filler caps. On my example, the paint is well applied, but the printed details could have been better. For all intents and purposes, this little Ford GT-40 does what it has to do – for kids, it takes them on endless races in the amazing world of make-believe. For me, it awakens memories of the time when some giants, men and machines, roamed the circuits of Daytona, Sebring, Riverside, Nürburgring, Monza, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Targa Florio and, of course, La Sarthe. This race car, the Ford GT-40, is in my collection under the themes "American Vehicles", "English Vehicles" and "Race Cars". ●

A escala nominal parece ser 1:58 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 72 mm. Cerca de 36 g. Este modelo representa um carro de corrida, o Ford GT40 Mark I, possivelmente um dos 87 chassis semi-monocoque, P/1000–1086, completados em 1965–1969. Estes carros de corrida eram normalmente equipados com o motor 289 Cobra "small block" V8 de 4736 cm³, com potências na ordem dos 380 bhp. Opcionalmente, alguns eram entregues aos clientes sem motor e transmissão.
O Ford GT40 é um dos meus dez automóveis favoritos – de todos os tempos. Possuo dele várias reproduções em diversas escalas e ao observá-las compreendo que não é fácil captar a essência do predador, os seus músculos e a sua postura. Reproduzir o voluptuoso Mark I é particularmente difícil a qualquer escala. Com este Ford GT-40, a Hot Wheels saiu-se bem. O espaço entre as rodas e a carroçaria é talvez demasiado e falta-lhe a sensualidade dos painéis a envolver as rodas traseiras, mas o resto está lá, incluindo o elegante arrebitamento da traseira, a lembrar a cauda de um cisne. Os detalhes estão bem definidos e proporcionados – adoro os retrovisores, junto às tampas dos depósitos. No meu exemplar, a pintura vem bem aplicada, mas os detalhes impressos podiam ter ficado melhor. Para todos os efeitos, este pequeno Ford GT-40 faz o que tem de fazer – aos miúdos, leva-os para intermináveis corridas no assombroso mundo do faz-de-conta. Para mim, desperta memórias do tempo onde alguns gigantes, homens e máquinas, percorriam os circuitos de Daytona, Sebring, Riverside, Nürburgring, Monza, Silverstone, Brands Hatch, do Targa Florio e, claro, de La Sarthe. Este automóvel, o Ford GT-40, encontra-se na minha colecção sob os temas "Veículos Americanos", "Veículos Ingleses" e "Carros de Corrida". ●

Versions and color variants

Below, On July 5, 1970, David Weir drives this Ford GT40 in the "500 Km de Vila Real", but does not finish, apparently due to overheating. Forty one years later, in September 2011, it’s nice to see this car again in Portugal, driven by Claude Nahum during the "Classic Endurance Racing" held at Estoril. It is now painted in a light metallic green close to the original "Borneo Green". In Vila Real it was painted in dark blue with an orange stripe. For my friends less acquainted with endurance racing, this was one of the Ford GT40s present in the 1968 "24 Heures du Mans" race, won by Pedro Rodriguez and Lucien Bianchi in the iconic Ford GT40 Mk I (GT40P/1075) entered by John Wyer Automotive Engineering. Sadly, this Ford GT40 Mk I (GT40P/1078), entered by Strathaven Limited and driven by Mike Salmon and Eric Liddell, had to abandon the race after 131 laps. ●
Em baixo, A 5 de Julho de 1970, David Weir conduz este Ford GT40 nos "500 Km de Vila Real", mas não termina, aparentemente devido a sobreaquecimento. Quarenta e um anos depois, em Setembro de 2011, é bom ver este carro de novo em Portugal, pilotado por Claude Nahum durante o "Classic Endurance Racing" realizado no Estoril. Está agora pintado num verde-claro metalizado próximo do "Borneo Green" original. Em Vila Real estava pintado em azul-escuro com uma faixa laranja. Para os meus amigos menos familiarizados com as corridas de resistência, este foi um dos Ford GT40 presentes nas "24 Heures du Mans" de 1968, ganhas por Pedro Rodriguez e Lucien Bianchi no icónico Ford GT40 Mk I (GT40P/1075) inscrito pela John Wyer Automotive Engineering. Infelizmente, este Ford GT40 Mk I (GT40P/1078), inscrito pela Strathaven Limited e pilotado por Mike Salmon e Eric Liddell, teve de abandonar a corrida após 131 voltas. ●
