Universal Hobbies – Ford Model T

Scale model of an automobile, the Ford Model T ¹, made by Universal Hobbies ². This example is reference 4660 ³, included in the "Legend Series". It is made in China. Metal body painted in black, black plastic top folded down. Black plastic base, comprising in a single element the fenders, running boards and a reproduction of the chassis. Transparent plastic windshield, black painted frame. Interior details in black plastic – unpainted seats, the firewall ("dashboard") painted brown to suggest wood and the steering wheel detailed in gray and "brass". Detailed plastic tires, black plastic spoked rims with "brass" wheel fasteners. No suspension. Nominal scale is 1:43 and overall length is approximately 3.3 in. About 1.5 oz. This model represents an automobile, a Ford Model T with "touring" bodywork, from 1912, equipped with a 4-cylinder in-line engine with 176.7 cu in and 20 hp (15 kW). Top speed was approximately 45 mph. 

In my collection, I only have three Universal Hobbies miniatures and this Ford Model T was an impulse purchase. I was especially captivated by the wheels, faithful to the spirit of the time – even though in this case they should have been white – and the rest didn't disappoint me. Correct proportions and painting and well molded and applied plastic details – the radiator, horn and side and rear lamps are charming, as is the detail of the hood hinge highlighted in brass color. As a note of interest, the hood without louvers is correct and the cylindrical "brass" object properly placed on the running board on the left side is the carbide generator ⁴ for the headlamps. It's a shame the headlamps didn't receive the deserved detailing of the lenses with silver paint or transparent plastic. On the other hand, and to my surprise, as this is certainly not its greatest ambition, this miniature rolls very well. Unfortunately, I found little else of Universal Hobbies' production (or the manufacturer itself) over the years, but I believe that their "Legend Series" included other equally appealing models – anyone with a list? After all these years, I am still satisfied with this good reproduction of the iconic "Tin Lizzie". Proof that sometimes impulse purchases can have a happy ending. This automobile, the Ford Model T, is in my collection under the themes "American Vehicles" and "Automobiles". ●

Carroçaria em metal pintada em preto, capota em plástico preto, recolhida. Base em plástico preto, compreendendo num só elemento os pára-lamas, estribos e a reprodução do chassis. Pára-brisas em plástico transparente, moldura pintada de preto. Detalhes interiores em plástico preto – os assentos sem pintura, a antepara ("tablier") pintada de castanho a sugerir madeira e o volante detalhado em cinzento e "latão". Pneus em plástico, detalhados, jantes raiadas em plástico preto com fixadores de roda em "latão". Sem suspensão. A escala nominal é 1:43 e o comprimento total é de aproximadamente 83 mm. Cerca de 42 g. Este modelo representa um automóvel, um Ford Model T com carroçaria "touring", de 1912, equipado com um motor de 4 cilindros em linha com 2896 cm³ e 20 hp (15 kW). A velocidade máxima era de aproximadamente 72 km/h.  

Na minha colecção, tenho apenas três miniaturas da Universal Hobbies e este Ford Model T foi uma compra por impulso. Cativaram-me sobretudo as rodas, fiéis ao espírito da época – ainda que neste caso devessem ser brancas – e o resto não me desiludiu. Proporções e pintura correctas e detalhes em plástico bem moldados e aplicados – o radiador, a buzina e as lanternas laterais e traseira são encantadores, assim como o detalhe da dobradiça do "capot" destacada em cor de latão. Como nota de interesse, o "capot" sem aberturas de ventilação está correcto e o objecto cilíndrico em "latão" devidamente colocado sobre o estribo no lado esquerdo é o gerador de acetileno ⁴ para os faróis. Pena os faróis não terem recebido o merecido detalhamento das lentes com tinta prateada ou em plástico transparente. Por outro lado e para minha surpresa, pois não será decerto essa a sua maior ambição, esta miniatura rola muito bem. Infelizmente, da produção da Universal Hobbies (ou do próprio fabricante) pouco mais encontrei ao longo dos anos, mas acredito que a sua "Legend Series" tenha incluído outros modelos igualmente apelativos – alguém com uma lista? Ao fim destes anos, continuo satisfeito com esta boa reprodução da icónica "Lagartixa de Lata". A prova de que, por vezes, as compras por impulso podem ter um final feliz. Este automóvel, o Ford Model T, encontra-se na minha colecção sob os temas "Veículos Americanos" e "Automóveis". ●

The unstoppable "Tin Lizzie"

With a length of about 134 in long, the Ford Model T is not a large car, but on the other hand it is surprisingly tall, perhaps because it needs to accommodate the elegant ladies promenading their lush hats around town. Another interesting detail is the large width between the wheels. At the time of its launch, in 1908, country roads were rudimentary, sometimes just parallel grooves left by animal-drawn vehicles. To avoid getting stuck in the mud, the Ford Model T adopts a width between wheels that allows it to follow these grooves, a feature that, combined with its low weight and generous ground clearance, makes it capable of overcoming almost any type of obstacle with astonishing ease, sometimes zigzagging like a lizard, which gives rise to one of its nicknames, the "Tin Lizzie". As a note of interest, until around 1915 the Model T uses acetylene headlamps and kerosene side and tail lamps. ●

Com um comprimento de cerca de 3,40 m, o Ford Model T não é um carro grande, mas por outro lado é surpreendentemente alto, talvez porque precise de acomodar as senhoras elegantes, de passeio pela cidade com seus exuberantes chapéus. Outro pormenor interessante é a grande largura entre as rodas. Na altura do seu lançamento, em 1908, as estradas rurais são rudimentares, por vezes apenas sulcos paralelos deixados pelos veículos de tracção animal. Para não ficar atascado, o Ford Model T adopta uma largura entre rodas que lhe permite seguir esses sulcos, característica que, aliada ao seu baixo peso e generosa altura ao solo, o torna capaz de transpor quase todo o tipo de obstáculos com espantosa facilidade, por vezes ziguezagueando como uma lagartixa, o que dá origem a um dos seus cognomes, "Tin Lizzie" ou a "Lagartixa de Lata". Como nota de interesse, até por volta de 1915 o Model T utiliza faróis a acetileno e luzes de presença a querosene. ●
