Poliguri – The Playwell Connection

After publishing the text "Brief Introduction to Poliguri" in 2012, several collectors started asking me why I had left out "the rare and expensive models". In fact, I mentioned them in the last paragraph, as "intruders", and later, in 2014, I explained my point of view in the text "Those rare Poliguris". I always assumed that my answer was implicit – I left them out because I didn't consider them part of the production of the Portuguese manufacturer. Putting a Playwell model in a Poliguri package doesn't make it a Poliguri – it's still a Playwell.

Even so, ten years later the questions remain. Were these models produced at the Poliguri factory? I don't know. Are they from the eighties? Possibly. Are they really rare? While Playwell models packed in Poliguri boxes, yes. And are they worth the high prices? Here, it's up to each collector to decide – things are worth what we're willing to pay for them. Personally and in this context, I don't like these cartoonish models, devoid of any "genetic" affinity with the Poliguri range, and just because of the aberrant connection to the brand's history I'm willing to pay up to €6 for a model in the box and in perfect condition. And it's not worth talking about "rarity". These are not Poliguri models – period.

But – insist some readers – how do these Playwell models appear in Poliguri's packaging? Here, we navigate the murky waters of speculation. Perhaps someone, subverting the founding spirit, considered that it would be cheaper to acquire these models in China than to continue producing the original models in Portugal, with the implicit advantage of expanding the range without development costs. Or perhaps, more likely, after production ended, it was necessary to resort to models from an external source to fill in the last packages, which explains why we find Poliguri and Playwell models side by side in the same set, as is the case with the reference "Guri's+Robot". The murky waters of speculation allow for almost anything.

For all intents and purposes, models of the Mercedes-Benz 300, BMW 5-series, Porsche 959, Ferrari F-40 and Jeep Cherokee have been found in sealed boxes coming from the factory and stored for years. We find these models in the "Guri Car" and "Guri's+Robot" series packaging and are identical to those sold by Playwell, but without pull-back mechanisms or electronic components to produce light and sound effects. However, there is the intriguing account of at least two Jeep Cherokees with electronic components found in packaging of the "Guri Car" series. Equally intriguing is the account of two Porsche Cabrio, one with the top mounted and the other with the top down, both with apparent Yatming "genetics", found in packages of the same series.

To conclude, it is important not to forget that we are talking about toys. In the 1990s, I don't think any kid gave any importance to the origin of the toy car inside the package. Between a Mercedes 200 marked Poliguri or a Porsche 959 of unknown origin, possibly the kid would choose the appealing racing car – or, given the opportunity, a car with lights and sound. Ten years after having publicly expressed my point of view about these Playwell "intruders", I admit that I became more tolerant and I even have a few examples in my collection, purchased at around €4 each. They are not Poliguri models at all – but they are part of a chapter in its history. A chapter with several blank pages. ●

Depois de em 2012 publicar o texto "Breve Introdução à Poliguri", diversos coleccionadores começaram a perguntar-me porque tinha deixado de fora "os modelos raros e dispendiosos". De facto, mencionei-os no último parágrafo, como "intrusos", e mais tarde, em 2014, expliquei o meu ponto de vista no texto "Those rare Poliguris". Sempre assumi que a minha resposta estava implícita – deixei-os de fora porque não os considerava parte da produção do fabricante português. Colocar um modelo Playwell numa embalagem da Poliguri, não faz dele um Poliguri – continua a ser um Playwell.

Ainda assim, dez anos volvidos as perguntas mantêm-se. Foram estes modelos produzidos na fábrica da Poliguri? Não sei. São dos anos oitenta? Possivelmente. São mesmo raros? Enquanto modelos Playwell embalados em caixas da Poliguri, sim. E valem os preços elevados? Aqui, a decisão é de cada coleccionador – as coisas valem o que estamos dispostos a pagar por elas. Pessoalmente e neste contexto, não gosto destes modelos caricaturais, desprovidos de qualquer afinidade "genética" com a gama Poliguri, e apenas pela aberrante ligação à história da marca estou disposto a pagar até 6 € por um modelo na caixa e em perfeito estado. E não vale a pena falarmos de "raridade". Estes não são modelos Poliguri – ponto final.

Mas – insistem alguns leitores – como surgem estes modelos Playwell nas embalagens da Poliguri? Aqui, navegamos nas turvas águas da especulação. Talvez alguém, subvertendo o espírito fundador, tenha considerado que saia mais barato adquirir estes modelos na China do que continuar a produzir os modelos originais em Portugal, com a vantagem implícita de expandir a gama sem custos de desenvolvimento. Ou talvez, o mais provável, depois de encerrada a produção, tenha sido necessário recorrer a modelos de uma fonte externa para preencher as últimas embalagens, o que explica encontrarmos modelos Poliguri e Playwell lado a lado no mesmo conjunto, caso da referência "Guri's+Robot". As turvas águas da especulação permitem quase tudo.

Para todos os efeitos, modelos do Mercedes-Benz 300, do BMW série 5, do Porsche 959, do Ferrari F-40 e do Jeep Cherokee, têm sido encontrados em caixas seladas oriundas da fábrica e armazenadas durante anos. Encontramos estes modelos nas embalagens da série "Guri Car" e "Guri's+Robot" e são idênticos aos vendidos pela Playwell, mas sem mecanismos de mola ou componentes electrónicos para produzir efeitos de luz e som. Todavia, existe o intrigante relato de pelo menos dois Jeep Cherokee com componentes electrónicos encontrados em embalagens da série "Guri Car". Igualmente intrigante é o relato de dois Porsche Cabrio, um com a capota montada e outro com a capota recolhida, ambos com aparente "genética" Yatming, encontrados em embalagens da mesma série.

Para concluir, é importante não esquecer que estamos a falar de brinquedos. Nos anos noventa, não acredito que algum miúdo desse importância à proveniência do carrinho dentro da embalagem. Entre um Mercedes 200 marcado Poliguri ou um Porsche 959 de proveniência desconhecida, possivelmente o miúdo escolheria o apelativo carro de corrida – ou, dada a oportunidade, um carro com luzes e som. Dez anos depois de ter expressado publicamente o meu ponto de vista sobre estes "intrusos" da Playwell, admito que fiquei mais tolerante e até possuo alguns exemplares na minha colecção, adquiridos a cerca de 4 € cada um. Não são de todo modelos da Poliguri – mas fazem parte de um capítulo na sua história. Um capítulo com várias páginas em branco. ●

Below, this Jeep Cherokee arrived in my hands as having been found in a package from the "Guri Car" series – unfortunately, as far as I know nothing allows me to confirm this. Interestingly, the base shows the expression "Made in China" erased, a procedure repeated in other examples of this model. ● Em baixo, este Jeep Cherokee chegou às minhas mãos como tendo sido encontrado numa embalagem da série "Guri Car" – infelizmente, tanto quanto sei nada me permite confirmá-lo. Curiosamente, a base mostra a expressão "Made in China" apagada, um procedimento repetido em outros exemplares deste modelo.
